I was feeling stressed this morning. Then I started feeling ill. Did you know that the two aren’t independent of each other? My stress actually directly affected my gut. ☁
The link between your gut and your stress
Your gut is rich in neurons. This means that your brain is constantly communicating with your gut. Stress may impact our gut health by:
- Slowing down digestion, causing bloating, pain, heartburn, and indigestion.
- Speeding it up, causing diarrhea
- Feeling nauseous and even faint
Why is this?
What happens to your gut during stress?
During stress (known as the fight or flight response) your body is trying to prioritise keeping you alive. Anything that isn’t needed for immediate survival is temporarily halted. This means digestion, reproductive system, and tissue repair take a back seat.
Stress does not only reduce our mental health but also our physical health. It is important to reduce stress so that this temporary negative emotion does not lead to permanent health problems.
